In September 2023 the Bramcote Athletics Track was officially opened by middle distance running legend and world champion Steve Cram. A day of festivities including a community open morning, Scarborough mile race and a gala dinner christened the new track in what was a fitting tribute to years of hard work to bring the track to the community.
The open morning allowed families from local schools to compete in a pentathlon and trying all aspects of track and field. The event was brilliantly supported and the sunshine made it all the better. After a short break in proceedings Steve Cram arrived and smiled for photos with some of the team that made this all possible as well as members of the public.
Mr Cram fired the starting gun for the first ever Scarborough Mile. Over 100 runners took part with many running on the track for the first time. All ages and abilities were catered for with runners as young as 6 and as old as 75. Clubs travelled from as far as York to take part and every runner received a medal to congratulate them for their achievement.
The evening saw a black tie gala dinner with attendees from the many parties that made the event possible with speeches from Mr Cram and Bramcote director Richard Guthrie whose vision of a running track on the Yorkshire coast has finally come true.
